Orienting Towards Potential

We started our summer season by attending a three-day workshop led by a visiting Katonah Yoga teacher. This style of yoga incorporates traditional Hatha postures with Taoist theory, geometry and metaphor.

A recurring metaphor from the long weekend was "orienting towards potential." It references the way we set up our postures to allow for (among other things) maximum breath and is supported by the hinging of our joints rather than relying on flexibility or strength which fades with time.

Orienting towards potential also entails great self-awareness and vision. The question of the workshop became: “Where do you want to go?”

When we think about how this metaphor plays out here in the studio, we can’t help but think about how much effort we put into planning the future while at the same time remaining deeply adaptable not only to the outside forces of the greater economy but also to the ever-changing needs our clients.

One of the best ways that we have found to adapt to these needs is to make almost everything to order (we do have a small in-stock offering) and to be open to customization. Above is a custom Walling Rug made for a special client in Hawaii. The dimensions, design layout, yarn qualities and colors were all selected specifically for this project.

In terms of process, most of our custom clients come to us because they have seen something in our line that they can imagine in one of their projects in a different scale or finish. After quotes have been submitted and approved, we work with folks through design drawings and sampling to achieve what it is that they envision.

Because of our commitment to social and environmental responsibility, there are some materials and finishes that we won’t work with, but within the boundaries of human and planetary health, we really enjoy solving these puzzles and seeing our work imagined in a new way.

We also like to think that something thoughtfully designed for a specific environment will have more longevity as it has been so thoroughly considered over time.

If you’d like to learn more about customizing one of our pieces for your special project, please reach out. We’d love to work with you!
