In Slow & Steady Service

As a small independent studio nearing 12 years of partnership, we are committed to and respectful of the continuous process required to develop and refine a design practice. Whether working with technology or historical craft techniques, we approach everything in the slow and steady service of curiosity and growth.

Our furniture, lighting and textiles are formed from a selection of considered natural materials. Our intention is to honor these resources and build work that will be cared for and passed down for generations.

We bring this care into our relationships with ourselves, employees, collaborators, vendors and clients. It is our hope to cultivate a community around this practice that is reciprocal and beneficial.

The above and below interior images are from a special nautical project by the thoughtful team at Michael K Chen Architecture featuring a custom sized Duo Rug in undyed braided wool. MKCA is a New York-based firm known for compact luxury spaces as well as community, non-profit and pro bono design work.

In this project, our Duo Rug centers a small living room with its dynamic shape while providing texture and warmth. Seeing our work alive and well in the world - especially in this time of uncertainty - brings a kind of grounding satisfaction to us as designers that is hard to express.

All of our rugs are made in New England and are available in standard sizes as well as in custom configurations to suit individual environments. Our standard yarn is undyed Canadian wool, but we have many yarn options available - including the use of Sunbrella - which is a good vegan option and allows our rugs to be used both indoors and out.

You can find our work through our Bainbridge Island studio, in New York at Colony or in Los Angeles at Lawson-Fenning. All of these locations are now open by appointment with masks and social distancing required. Please contact us at shop@graindesign.com for more information, custom quotes or to request braided yarn samples.
