Giving Thanks: Ornament Benefit
If you are already overwhelmed by the holiday season, take a chance and opt-out with us. You may miss a few deals, but you might just save yourself.
We are celebrating this long weekend with a house full of friends and an attempt to reflect on gratitude in between the busyness.
This year, our studio is most grateful for our new production assistant, Hannah Bartlett - a Northwest native and recent RISD graduate - who envisioned Douglas, the cheerful ornament seen above and below.
Douglas is carved from some of our favorite locally reclaimed Douglas Fir, finished in beeswax and strung from brass and hemp. He is up for auction along with 50 other one-of-a-kind original works as part of the WorkOf benefit for Scope of Work, a social impact company with the purpose of making the creative industry more inclusive.
We often use material itself as a starting off point for our work and Douglas is no exception. In this spontaneous hanging sculpture, we wanted to honor the graphic grain lines of the iconic wood that is so much a part of the Northwest material culture.
We are thrilled to be a part of the WorkOf community and to be participating in this event to support a nonprofit that connects design and social impact.
The online auction is live until December 17. If you are based in New York, you can check out all the ornaments in real life at a festive installation at the WorkOf showroom on December 12. You can bid here and RSVP for the event here.
In the spirit of the season, Grain will be donating 50% of every sale made through December 1 to our favorite community nonprofit, Bainbridge Island Land Trust, that has worked to protect 1417 acres on our small island since its founding in 1989. Visit our site here to participate.
